The World Needs See With Fresh Eyes, Eli Pariser

1. I remember watching CNN with my parents a few years back, when I still lived with them. They were doing a story that revolved around "fact checking" Michael Moore's latest movie "Sicko", which was a documentary attempting to expose the health care industry in America. Michael Moore said in the film that Canadian health care was pretty good; CNN said that Michael wasn't telling the truth. To make things interesting they actually brought Michael Moore on the show to defend himself. After a long argument that discusses the pharmaceutical companies of America, Moore says, "Right, like the pharmaceutical companies haven't paid you massive amounts of money to say all of this. I wonder what pharmaceutical ad pops up during the break?" Then, when the break came, lo and behold, 3 different kinds of drug commercials aired curing that break.

It's obvious that CNN wasn't telling the truth and fudging facts, why wouldn't they, when the drug companies are lining CNN pockets? And additional proof do you need, then to see the drug companies' commercials airing on CNN?

2. Television always tell us to "Stay tuned". "Stay tuned for this show coming up next." What they're really saying is, "Keep watching, so we can make more money."

The easiest way to grab hold of the steering wheel, I think, is to start by turning off the damn TV.

What is New Media? Vin Crosbie.

1. Land, Water, and Air. These three are what you would call "medium". These are not to be confused by the "vehicles", which use the medium to "move around."

2. Interpersonal (one to one) communication, mass (one to many) communication, and new (or many to many) communication. If you think about the mass medium, the Television that projects the medium isn't the medium itself, it's merely a vehicle that gets that medium out.

3. Interpersonal communication is great in that the person you communicate your message to can respond and give you feedback, but this cannot be done if you are trying to communicate to a massive amount of people, which is the downfall of broadcast communication. You can spread your message far and wide, but there is not exchange of thoughts or ideas.

4. The New Medium is able to produce the best of both interpersonal communication and broadcast communication, enabling many people to respond and communicate with many people. But there is a downside to the New Medium; it is completely dependent on technology in order to function, just like the airplane is.
